History
Our cafe opened for business in November, 2010, with the goal of meshing the American and English cultures in a quaint yet elegant setting. It is our heartfelt wish that you find our café to be an uplifting and enjoyable gathering spot.
So who are Joe and Rosie? We have been asked this question more times than not!
The name Joe and Rosie is the rich blending of the best of the English and American cultures. (Not the owners names, but I don’t have a problem being called Rosie!)
Joe refers to a cup of coffee that also correlates to the average JOE, the “common man’s drink”, a Jolt Of Energy (JOE), a combination of Java and Mocha, or perhaps the result of Secretary of the Navy, JOE Daniel’s 1913 decision to ban alcohol from all US Navy warships leaving coffee as the strongest option.
Rosie Lee, a cup of TEA, has its origins in Cockney Rhyming Slang, a provincial language from London, England. Some say the term was coined in the 19th century as a way for petty criminals to hide from the peelers (Police Officers). Others suspect the slang was invented by “Chaunters” and “Patterers”, street traders who peddled their wares all over England.
